How to Show Team Appreciation

How to Show Team Appreciation at Work

Appreciation is lacking in the workplace. It is not because leaders refuse to celebrate their team's wins or do not care about their team's progress; instead, people are too busy. As leaders, it is crucial to take the time and recognize your team and their hard work. Did you know that over 39% of people feel underappreciated in the workplace? By making small efforts to show your appreciation, you will drastically increase the morale and performance of your team. To prove that over 78% of people say recognition motivates them to work harder, and it will also increase employee engagement by 60%!

Below are four simple ways to show your team your appreciation and how much you care.

  1. Meet With Your Team. Prioritize having consistent one-on-one meetings with your team. In your meeting, communicate what you are grateful for and what you appreciate about them and their work.

  1. Go Public. People like to feel recognized in front of their peers and share specific authentic wins. You can also do this by sending an email or a video, text message, handwritten card, small, personalized gifts, etc. Show your appreciation in a small gesture, and people will notice and be genuinely thankful.

You want your gesture to be personalized and match your team members' personalities. Get to know your team authentically and when you show your appreciation, tailor your gratitude to each member.

  1. Give Your Team Time Off. The gift of R&R to your team is invaluable. Give them the time to be with family and friends, explore, or do whatever they want. The American Psychological Association states that 58% of people are more productive, and 55% believe their work quality was better following time off.

  1. Feed People. Healthy food nourishes the soul. Have a potluck or give virtual food gift cards. There are so many ways you can feed people, and it is an easy way to show your team that you care.

Teresa Amabile and Steven Kramer's book, The Progress Principle, explains the importance of celebrating both the big and small wins your team accomplishes to increase contentment amongst your team. It is critical to show people that you notice their progress.
