How to Become More Balanced

I believe that our current work culture makes it extremely difficult, almost impossible to feel balanced. If you are working and you also have a family, trying to feel balanced right now is extremely, extremely difficult. What I mean by this is you want to spend time with your friends and family, you want to be successful at work, you want to have time to exercise, you might want to have a little bit of downtime watching Netflix, you might want some time for your hobbies, right? But the way that our current work culture is, is we work the majority of the time that we're awake. We're probably not getting enough sleep. Spending time with our kids, when we're with our kids we are on our phones looking at email, social media, news updates, et cetera. Rushed to exercise, and when we're exercising, we might also be emailing. It's really, really, really difficult to be balanced right now. And everyone is striving for success, wants to be happy, but the way that our world is, makes it very, very difficult.

If you don't feel balanced, you are going to be more stressed. You're going to be more anxious. You might have insomnia. You might feel like you're missing out on your kids' lives or not having enough time to invest in your personal relationships, your marriage, your partnerships, your friendships. You will feel that your life is just rushing by like a bullet train. You feel like you're not spending time on what you want to be spending time on. And in your heart and your soul, you just feel unbalanced. And it doesn't align with what you want to do, who you want to be in truly how you're spending your time.

I have felt very unbalanced through different parts of my life. One story that comes to mind is when I was the Director of Sales and Marketing at the W Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles, and I was working consistently seven days a week. I would get to the hotel at 8:00 AM, I would stay till 9:00 PM. I was stressed. I was overwhelmed. I was anxious about business results, and I didn't have balance. I mean, I would get up at 5:00 and go to the gym. I wasn't sleeping enough. I certainly wasn't seeing friends enough. Downtime? No. No. There was hardly any downtime. And I felt so, so unbalanced. You might be feeling that way right now. And I felt that way for years, unbalanced for years.

So, if you are feeling really unbalanced right now and you more of that balance feeling in your life, what can you do? The first thing is that you can get very clear on what are your values, what do you truly care about. And you can look at, does my life, Monday through Friday and on the weekend, does my life align with my values? The second step is to take time to reflect, whether this is talking with people in your life. Journaling. But you're actually doing assessment. How am I spending my time? And is the way that I'm spending my time hurting me or helping me in this desire to feel balanced? Or does it feel completely unbalanced like my story of when I was at the W Hollywood hotel?

The third step is to look at time. We all have the same amount of time. So, look at where do you want to increase? For example, time with friends. Where do you want to increase downtime? Leisure time, relaxation time. Do a time assessment and see where can you do it. The fourth step is to design your week, design your evenings, your weekends, so that it aligns with your values and then it feels more balanced. Just like you design your apartment or your home, just like you might design your vacation, you can design your life and you can build in more balance.

And then, step five is to continuously adjust. It's going to depend on what's going on in your life and you are going to have to be consistently checking in with yourself. How balance do I feel and what do I need to do to change and adjust? Know that you can always become more balanced.
